Jimio riding around Gilletts Lake on his Fuji Finest |
It took about 3 years before I had to buy anything for my bike which was a new inner tube after I got a flat one night. I didn't even know it till I got home. That cost me $4 [Up to $49 now] Then about a year later a pedal broke off [they were old] so I went to Barber's Bike Shop to get a used one. He had lots of used ones but none in my size threads so I was forced to buy a new pair of Redline pedals for $12 [Up to $61, $62 with tax] Then about 3 months later my inner tube was starting to pop outside through the side of the tire. The tires were so worn out the knobs were peeling off. Back to Barbers Bike Shop again for a pair of Kenda knobbys for $20 [Up to $83 with tax which isn't bad for 4 years, remember I only paid $35 for this thing] Now it has been 8 months with no more expenses, but I am worried about the cables. Maybe they will hold out another year.
It sure beats the upkeep of a car with the gas, insurance and maintanance which was at least $1700/yr. My old gal Murray only cost me only $20.75/yr. Of course the main difference is distance and speed and carrying capacity but I can get around with virtually nothing. The only other problems are riding in the wind and rain and hitting an occasional patch of ice I dont see and then wiping out but only getting slightly sore ribs or a pulled arm or leg muscle. I also seem to get a lot of foot cramps from all the pedaling but I feel the benefits of exercise outweights that. I do have to worry about cars hitting me because they never seem to look for bikes only for other cars. I wonder if joggers ever get hit by cars? So I take extra precautions due to car drivers because I understand there are not very many bikes on the road [yet, but wait till more people go broke] and they just aren't looking for bikes and don't think bikes will even ever be in there way. I have no chance against a car so believe me I'm very humbled by a car's ability to crush me in a few short seconds so that is why I'm not that angry with car drivers. I'm more worried about surviving than being angry and it takes away from my alertness. I just want to get from point A to point B alive and healthy in one piece. I have no time to waste energy on yelling or flipping the bird. Hopefully some day all main roads can have nice wide bike trails and cars will keep their eyes out for bikers, but I think that is a few years off yet.
